Vegas Cyclists Death a Homicide After Video Posted to Social Media
The victim in the hit and run of a Las Vegas bicyclist on August 14, 2023, was determined to be a 64-year-old retired police chief from Bell, California named Andreas Probst.
Probst was riding his mountain bike in the bike lane on North Tenaya Way near the intersection with Centennial Parkway when he was hit from behind by a car around 6 a.m.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department had previously identified the victim as a pedestrian. The Clark County coroner’s office said the bicyclist died at University Medical Center.
Police later arrested the 17-year-old driver of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra on suspicion of hit-and-run after he fled the scene of the crash. His name has not been released due to his age. They later determined that the car was stolen, and was fleeing from another hit and run crash when the driver intentionally swerved into the bike lane to target the bicyclist.
The 17-year-old boy will face open murder charges after detectives found a cell phone video posted to social media that shows that the crash was intentional, according to a statement from the Las Vegas Metro Police.
Metro homicide detectives took over the investigation and the 17-year-old’s charges will include open murder, police said.
Andreas Probst is survived by his wife, Crystal Probst, who would have celebrated her 35th anniversary with Andreas in September of 2023, their daughter Taylor, and son Michael Probst.
“When they know somebody’s dead, and a family is sitting out in that lobby waiting, somebody needs to come out,” Crystal Probst told the Las Vegas Review Journal. The family waited for four hours at the University Medical Center before being told that Andreas was dead.
They traveled there from the scene of the accident, which they drove to after being alerted by 64-year-old Andreas’ apple watch that he had fallen.
The Las Vegas Review Journal reported that the homicide was the 87th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metro Police Department jurisdiction for 2023.
